3 years ago I picked up Tim Ferriss' "4 Hour Work Week†- the bible of the first wave of nomadic online entrepreneurs. Like many people exploring this new concept of career and financial freedom beyond waiting for an increasingly uncertain retirement, the “4HWW" changed my perspective on my career, freedom, and life in general. The End of Jobs presents an even more compelling argument on how the traditional education, career and asset accumulation script is failing. Not just failing a generation of Millennials who can't get professional jobs after 4 years and tens or hundreds of thousands of college debt, but all workers. Pearson presents the historical contexts of work throughout history, showing how these paradigms each crumbled as a result of power shifts from Monarchies to Banks to Corporations. Today, the power shift has moved from the Corporation to the Individual, and as such, a "job" in the traditional sense is doomed. After laying the groundwork for this theory, Pearson then presents actionable steps to hedge these risks and attain freedom. Like The Four Hour Work Week, there are also specific strategies and tactics. With the rate at which digital innovation moves, it's difficult to keep these tactics timeless. But the concepts of the "Stair Step Method" and Apprenticeships will hold any fledgling entrepreneur in good stead for years to come. I for one will use it and the accompanying bonus material as a knowledgebase in my own business and personal processes. There is a somewhat derogatory term, the Wantrepreneur: a person who gorges on entrepreneurial philosophy and strategies but is yet to pull the trigger and go out on a limb themselves. Wantrepreneurship is a necessary stage in the journey - you must first decide that being an Entrepreneur is something worth caring about. The End of Jobs provides the mission as well as the toolkit to take those first steps. To be clear, this is not just a tactics-based "how to start a business" handbook for newbies. Nor is it insiders-only philosophical read for established business owners. It's the necessary balance of age-old philosophical theories, real-world examples of successful entrepreneurs, and nitty-gritty strategies and tactics that can create a catalyst for change: not only the WHY, but the HOW and WHEN (i.e. right now)!
In my travels over the past 2 years or so, I've met so many regular people who live a lifestyle that most people think is impossible. No job, but enough money to have a comfortable life, and the freedom and time to do what they want.I've struggled to explain exactly what IT is, and how to do it, but for those of us who have taken the red pill and left "The Matrix," it is blinding obvious that the entrepreneurial path is a safer path than the college and career path that worked so well for the past generation (or did it?).This book attempts to explain exactly what is happening, why it is happening, and how you can get in on it.I highly recommend reading this if you want to know why and how I've been able to live like a king while travelling to 13 different countries over the past 2 years, without ever having a "real" job, and without ever running out of money and having to return home.We are at a time in history where this sort of freedom is the more accessible to people than ever before.I don't want to be preaching to people how they should become an entrepreneur, I know that is not right for everyone. However, everyone CAN be "entrepreneurial" and in fact that may be the only way to have a job or make a living in the future.Everyone should understand this, which is why I highly recommend this book as he lays it out in a very well written and easy to understand way.
Somewhat disappointed. I've been reading Taylor's blog for a while and really enjoy what he writes. He has exposed me to some really great ideas and I was expecting this to be a visionary compendium of all the things he shares and more.Instead it was just a lengthy marketing pamphlet for how to live as a digital nomad, supported by examples of his friends. A smarter four hour workweek if you will.Don't get me wrong, there is good information in there if this is your goal. But rather than latching onto truly revolutionary ideas, such as the true "end of jobs" as a result of our transition into a post-capitalist economy, he just shows you how to be a different sort of capitalist. Its worth a browse if all of these ideas are new to you, but I'm much more excited to read Paul Mason's game changing book that just came out. Postcapitalism: A Guide to Our Future
The book basically explains how there is no job security and that you can create your own work, be an entrepreneur. There's a lot of anecdotes and stories (some more commonly quoted than others) from other business books. This would be a good book for someone considering leaving their 9 to 5 job, to see why doing that might be a viable option. It also might be a good book to recommend if you're a digital nomad or entrepreneur trying to explain the current work climate to your parents or friends.I read it in one sitting to have a feel for the material & I think a determined reader could do that in one go. At the current promo for USD$0.99 for the Kindle version, it's worth getting + you get the bonus downloads (including 10 audio interviews) which are interesting.
"Entrepreneurship expands your power to design your life. You are a part of the first generation that has radical access to the tools of production. Rather than choosing from a set of options, you can design your own."Throughout the book it helped me to reconsider my life. A small step for me to shift but it is good start. I would give this 4.5 stars because some of them are not thoughts provoking enough. However, many points in the book make me realized that I tried too hard to plan a career. It was completely wrong path for me. I guess I gotta to move soon than I thought. Cause I don't want neither being a turkey nor wait for inevitable to come for me.
