I am an avid reader, especially of books with young women as main characters, and especially when they are true stories, but I will admit it's not often that I finish a book, albeit an almost-300-page book in less than two days. Anyone with a childhood wherein they and their siblings mostly just took care of each other, whether the parents were physically or emotionally absent, and in which home life was basically chaos in poverty, can relate to the foundation of the story. Especially if you strolled quickly down the path of drugs or alcohol to soften the blow of an uneasy upbringing (or took to the streets). The main ride portrays a life of crime and a girl who, although she happily made many of the decisions that led her down her path, was taken major advantage of. It's an entertaining story that you will have a hard time putting down, "just one more page, one more chapter," until you realize you can't take a break and must see what happens next. but it's not just some story, it's a girl's struggle through the blow boom in NYC & taking care of her little sister while trying to have a comfortable life for herself. but it is a tale of trial and error, of living on the edge while constantly trying to take the edge off, of being used by those around her but loving them anyway; of a fight for survival. I know I'll be coming back to read this again and again, as glamorously written tragedies take ahold of me quite relentlessly. I promise, even if you can't relate to her, you can sympathize with her, or at least be taken aback and fascinated by her story. Five stars all the way. Thank you for sharing, Miss Sena.
I read this book in one night. I was captivated by the story and strength and resilience of this young woman who, in middle school, began selling drugs to better her life. As I was a toddler when the narrative began, I personally cannot remember this time in American history. This book shed light on the Reagan years, and the advent of cocaine in America.Portions of the book made me cry. The narrative is so heart-wrenching, you want to reach through the pages and hold this young girl, you want to step in for her absent parents. You keep turning the pages because you want to see how it all turns out.What I really found lacking was more information on how the author is doing today. There was brief information at the end, but I would have found more information about her life in the intervening 25 years from her teenage years to publication equally as fascinating.Another book perhaps?
This book was so much better than I thought it would be, I loved it. It's one of those books that you can't put down then when it's finished you wished you hadn't had read it so fast! It's a memoir based on a 15 yr old girl (Indra Sena) who mixed with the wrong crowd. After trying out drugs, Indra began to assist a Colombian drug dealer to distribute drugs, eventually moving up to selling Cocaine. She started off small then rose to big time dealing but it wasn't without consequence; although I was surprised at the outcome. I couldn't put this book down, it was well written in that it grabbed the readers attention from the start. It was sad, scary but exciting all at once. I felt a bit sorry for the safe house woman just because she was poor and didn't have a big role in the drug distribution, just loaned her house for quick cash. She should have known better and needed to pay for breaking the law but I just don't know that she was fully aware of the consequences of her actions. Armando on the other hand, Indra's boss and lover, was a sexist alpha male who's double standards annoyed the hell out of me. He knew exactly what he was doing, manipulating Indra to get what he wanted...
I couldn't put this book down. It's a wild ride through the drug world of theeighties told by an intelligent but very vulnerable player. Her story is thestuff of a block-buster movie--the characters, the cars, the bars, the food, thedeals, the danger all come to life as if you were watching it on the big screen,and you'll want to know what happened to all of the characters in the end. There'seven an epilogue. If they do make a movie of this it will be great--but it won't beas good as the book!
This was one of those books I started and just couldn't put down. The tale was horrifying yet riveting, and the details were told in a down-to-earth style. It's amazing what the human psyche can cope with, and how we create ways to live under difficult conditions. I couldn't help thinking of my own teenage daughter and comparing her (happy, safe, and love-filled) daily life with the author's. The book was hard to read because I felt such empathy and compassion for Indra's terrifying situation. At the same time, I often found myself admiring her cleverness in dealing with the world she was immersed in. I very highly recommend this fast-paced, well-written book. It will open your eyes and make you think before you judge others' lifestyles.
Surprisingly entertaining and well written. I know the subject matter is a little edgy, but I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading the book, and found the story interesting enough. For some reason it strikes me that the author, Indra Sena, knows a whole lot about the drug trade, and her words ring true, and not make believe. There are funny things about the way she writes, and besides a hiccup or two, this purchase was worth it. For those that appreciate the subject matter, I would recommend the book which is kind of something else in that the life the author claims she lived and experienced, is truly out of the ordinary. The characters are a long list of original voices that augment the whole of the book. 4 Stars.
I really can't explain the reasons i love this story but it gripped me & made me wish the book would never end! Very well written!!
