With family members who married last year, I was looking give these new couples a good, solid reference pertaining to WILLS and ESTATES (e.g., Wills, Trusts, Living Trusts, Durable Power of Attorney, et al).THE COMPLETE IDIOT's GUIDE to WILLS & ESTATES (Fourth Edition) will give you that foundation of knowledge. It details the various legal entities, reviews the uses of each, and lists the pro's and con's. An excellent primer for people to talk legal-speak to lawyers (Or least understand the basis of the conversation).For families with children, I would pair this up with THE BUSY FAMILY's Guide to ESTATE PLANNING (Hanks), published by NOLO, which provided extra details dealing with children, guardians, and extended estate planning.Read the book, use the forms found in the CDs (found in both books), and find a good lawyer who practices in estate planning to solve your concerns. Steve Maple�s The Complete Idiot�s Guide to Wills and Estates does this masterfully. And, to my relief, in plain English. Impressive for an attorney that�s taught and practiced for the over 25 years!In very easy-to-read language, Maple thoroughly lays out the whole terrain of estate planning�from having a will to ways to save on current taxes and issues to consider in caring for aging parents. Going beyond mere explanation, he�s packed this book with helpful forms and lists to get the reader started in their own estate planning. I picked up this book to help me with my conversations with donors but I ended up sitting down with an attorney to work on my own plan!Maple groups his 24 chapters into five sections:Part 1: Assets, Assets, AssetsPart 2: About Wills, Trusts. . . and ProbatePart 3: All in the Family�and Just a Little BeyondPart 4: Taxes You Must Pay, and Those Maybe You Don�tPart 5: Retirement, Elder Issues, and the Broad Planning PictureThe structure of The Complete Idiot�s Guide to Wills and Estates makes it a great book for busy professionals. It�s very easy to read in short chunks of time. And it�s not just for the beginner. Although it�s now somewhat dated, Maple gives some pretty technical examinations of taxes and IRS regulations. For readers that way find themselves losing interest during the dryer technical sections there are tips, quotes, and anecdotal information interspersed throughout. As a development professional, I was particularly glad for Chapter 18 �How Charitable Donations Can Save You Money.� I�m trying to figure out how I could make this chapter required reading for prospective donors.More than any planned giving seminar I�ve attended, and for a lot less money, The Complete Idiot�s Guide to Wills and Estates has helped me see estate planning from the donor�s perspective. I highly recommend this book.
I found this to be quite useful when settling family estates and in my own estate planning. It also helped me escape a lawyer who wanted to do a lot of expensive plans and trusts to take care of a relatively simple need. Showed me a path that my personal lawyer could execute for me.
The book is a bit outdated, but the one I wanted was nit available until next October. So, I purchased this to help a friend so her trust (or maybe will).There are some really easy forms in the book, which will help people feel more empowered about Wills and Estates.The CD has some great stuff, and she can use all this as an outline, and educate herself while she is waiting for the new edition.
I picked this book up for 1 cent plus shipping from one of Amazon's book partners. I gloat at getting so much good information for a total of $4.00! The treatment of the need for probate is especially good, as it correctly warns you that if you die without a will, the local probate judge (through an administrator he/she names) will determine who gets what, according to state law. This may NOT be much like you wish. The book came in a few days and was in good shape. Thanks, Amazon, for partnering with other book sellers! Al Hester, Athens, GA
