I give this book one star because there really is nothing new in the book, as far a Earth Magic, the title is miss leading, I really was looking for something that wasn't Michael Harner based, but this is what you will be getting. I left Michael Harner's group years ago mainly because he was giving out a you are a shaman cards with a number and every thing just for joining his group, it takes a lifetime of training and you don't just become a shaman because you read a book. This book is okay for someone that is just starting out, very elementary, Farmer clams there are some advanced rituals in this book, there is nothing that a beginner can't do, so for these people you would like to learn some about other worlds, faeries and the like, how to find your spirit animal, beginner stuff like that, some soul retrieval meditations, then it would be a good place to start,over half of the book is used to convince you about shamanism. If your looking for ways to help heal the earth with ceremony, don't waist your money.
This is a good book, but I don't know if I would recommend it as an introductory book. It should be the one you read after a broader based book on Native American spirituality. It delves into meditative journey's and the like, which can be fun if you are able. I am too grounded for most of the techniques mentioned here in. Perhaps after more personal training and educating I will be able to reach the meditative realms that he speaks of in places other than my dream world.
Clear, well written introduction (for me) to shamanism and animal powers. The basics I believe are covered well. The author has a concrete, clear writing style. It discusses concepts of "earth magic" on which the Earth Magic Oracle Cards by same author are also based. This book seems also geared for those on the path to becoming a shaman. The book, however, is not a guidebook for the cards. You don't need to purchase this book in order to interpret the cards. That being said, IT CERTAINLY DOESN'T HURT TO READ THE BOOK.

I love Steven Farmers book and since I also have his Earth Magic Oracle Cards I had to get this one too. It is a nice companion book to the cards. He makes the book so nice to read with stories to go along with what he is helping you to understand.
Good book with practical advice and strategies - relevant to today's world.
What can I say? Read it, try it.
Enjoying it, easy to relate to.
