From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Imagine, if you will, two famous Americans whose childhood selves were strong and portentous of their future adult lives but whose bodies stayed small and childlike as they achieved their incredible feats. Meltzer has chosen to portray these iconic figures in this way, perhaps in the hopes that modern-day kids will more easily identify with them. Both narratives are told in first person, which raises doubts as to whether they could truly be called biographies. For example, Amelia Earhart recounts an incident in which she and her sister built a ramp off the side of a shed so they could ride a cart off the roof. Her brother comes along and asks, "Amelia, are you sure this is a good idea?" She replies, "This isn't a good idea. It's the BEST idea!" Such conversations and the lack of resources calls the books' informational value into question. On the other hand, they each talk about the character traits that made Earhart and Lincoln wonderful role models and determined in their life pursuits. The illustrations, while a bit odd, are also rather charming. Their comiclike nature and the brief, readable text will appeal to young readers. Adults who read these books with children will have plenty to discuss regarding the hard work, persistence, and determination each person showed, as long as it's clear that the books themselves are fictionalized.—Maggie Chase, Boise State University, ID

"Sometimes, the hardest fights don't reveal a winner, but they do reveal character. Especially when you're fighting for something you believe in."Abraham Lincoln's story is one fantastic read. There are so many powerful messages within it that readers can apply to their own lives. One of the best lessons readers will take out of this book, is that no matter what, Abraham Lincoln always stood up for what he believed in, even if he was the only one to do so. He was never afraid to speak his mind, or what he believed in. He always fought for what was right. He also never gave up. He lost 4 elections before he became President of the United States of America.Another thing that readers will learn, is that from childhood to being President of the United States of America, Mr Lincoln never shied away from helping those who needed help. He never stopped standing up for what was right, nor did he stop believing in what was right, even if he was the only one. As President, he saw the end of the civil war, and the end of slavery. He gave powerful speeches that, still to this day are quoted by others. One of the most powerful speeches in history was his, and it is only 271 words long. Out of that speech he said, "All men are created equal."I love that at the end of the book, there are a few historical pictures of Mr. Lincoln, along with one of his quotes. I loved that I also learned something more about Abraham Lincoln while reading this book, and that is he had a love of reading He always read, even when he was younger, and all through out his adult years. What a great book to read to get know more about Abraham Lincoln. This book makes the perfect addition to any home, school, public or classroom libraries. I highly recommend picking it up.

I bought this book for my granddaughter who was five at the time, and who is now 6 1/2. This book and Brad's "I am Amelia Earhart" are still her two favorite books, and she pulls them out of the bookcase for me to read to her. We discuss the pictures and the stories. I love the encouragement found in these books to be true to yourself and to your values. I love the inspiration to follow your dreams, and to dream big. There are no other books that I've found that give our children those necessary "heroes" to inspire them, and to teach them, as Brad Meltzer says, "Ordinary People Change the World". I eagerly await (and have pre-ordered) the rest of the series.I believe these are a Great addition to any parent/grandparents' library. It would be wonderful to have these in school and public libraries, too!

We've read and loved every book in this series, but this was one of the few we bought because of my child's huge Abe Lincoln obsession. The storytelling and art is so engaging, and I really love how this series makes historic figures so relatable to kids. By the end of this one, I got a little teary thinking about Abe and his impact on our country.

Brad Meltzer delivers an interesting, inspiring book about the life of Abraham Lincoln. Young readers will learn what Abraham Lincoln believed in during childhood, and as President. This delightful story tells about how much Abraham Lincoln enjoyed reading and writing, and why these good habits were important. The author also introduces the topic of how we sometimes are forced to deal with bullies, and why it's important to stand up for what you believe in.In addition, Brad Meltzer includes in this intriguing story why cheating is unfair, hurting animals is wrong, and doing the right thing will make you a better person. The story also teaches self-respect, and the true meaning of freedom, and justice for all. This interesting story also discusses why slavery is wrong, and the Civil War is included in the story as it defines why it was important to fight for freedom, and end slavery, and the war. The author highlights that all men are created equal, why our voice is to be heard when something is wrong, and why injustice should not be allowed. Most important, the young reader learns how much Abraham Lincoln was dedicated to freedom and justice for all in America, as he believed that our voice is our strength. This inspiring book teaches history, and many other lessons to be learned. The colorful illustrations make this story come to life. Motivating, inspiring, and educational. Highly recommended for young readers, teachers, and parents!

These 'I am' books are great! They are not short one minute reads though. Expect to spend at least 5 minutes reading this book out loud to your child. My 5 year olds' interest is held very well, I love that she is learning history. The history follows the lines of traditional text book storylines, but if you read something you don't agree with, it's easy enough to explain how you see it to your child. The books are written very nicely for children to understand. I would purchase more in the series. Thanks!

This is the 2nd Brad Meltzer "Ordinary People" book I have purchased for my grandchildren. It seems that adults enjoy these books as much as children do. Each one highlights the "ordinary" person's history and makes it come to life. I learned something from each book even though I thought I knew that person's story. I think I have read each book at least 6 times to my grandchildren. Wonderful writing, wonderful true stories.

This is an excellent children's book. It is wonderful to find books for even very young children that teach them about "heroes". This author wrote about a great man of history as a child. He introduced President Lincoln in a way that teaches young people to learn to respect our history heroes. I would recommend this book to all parents of children 1 year and up through grade school. It will become your child's favorite book.
