My 13 yo son had to read this over the summer for school. It kept his interest and prompted hours of discussion regarding the past and present. It's hard to find the right time to discuss the horrors of slavery and the complexity of human and race relations. The characters in this book and their plight provided a lot for us to talk and think about. I'm glad it was assigned. I plan to read it next.
So very well written with searing details that bring the horrors of slavery in America into stark relief. It also shows that American slaves were Humans that created and lived in a loving family and community with it's distinct culture, knowledge, and traditions. And it shows how a caring and respectful people with a tradition of warmly greeting strangers, even those that look very different from them, similar to Native Americans in North America, get savagely treated and killed by Europeans. This is one of those special instances when a "loser" gets to write history...the whole history.
This book was fantastic! I was watching NY1 one morning and some students were sharing the books they were reading this summer. One little girl shared this book and said it was the best book she'd ever read! So I bought it and noticed it had earned a Corretta Scott King Award, as well. Although it only mildly touched on the horrible institution abd acts of slavery, it was written in a way that a young reader could understand without it being extremely graphic. I am a kindergarten teacher in an African American community and while I cannot use it as a Read Aloud for my students, I will absolutely ask my principal if she can purchase a copy for each upper grade teacher to be used for our daily, morning, read aloud. Our children must learn about their history because in may ways it will give them strength, perseverance and will also assist in shaping their future. Sharon Draper did an amazing job!
Excellent book, although the young girl endured so much horrific treatment from adult males. She continued to maintain her strength and courage through out the journey. I often reflect on what my ancestors had to endure for my life to be better. I wish more students had an understanding of the many sacrifices that were made by African Americans, as they were stolen and taken from their homes, and forced into slavery. It took a great deal of courage and strength.
I read this book for a college course, actually. It is difficult to call it a "good" book because the content is pretty awful, but it is well written. There are many sad and stressful moments; the author is very good at pulling you into the emotions of what it would be like to live through the horrors of slavery. My mom read the book after me as well. Neither of us could put it down.
A very poignant, moving story. Very well written. It breaks my heart to read about what my people had to endure after being free in their own country. The author obviously did extensive research and was able to write an excellent story based on that research.
This book covers so many of the various topics to contend with on the subject of slavery. The pure evil of treating humans like filthy animals. Whites who thought slavery was okay if you treated slaves fairly. The rape of innocent Black women with no one to protect them. The pure evil of racism. All of these topics and more are touched upon with a wonderful and exciting narrative. Outstanding book. I couldn't stop reading it.
I read this as an adult and recommend this for middle/ high school age. An age appropriate look at slavery, which introduces the historical horror of this institution without being too graphic for young readers.
