A wonderful family adventure story (and very timely in this era of helicopter parenting). This is a delightful (and too quick) read. The family in this true story takes a giant leap of faith and journeys off to an island in the West Indies, determined to make a life for themselves in a strange and beguiling place. Lots of tales of discovery, self-discovery, and funny cultural miscues. This story is told in a warm and engaging manner, with love for all the varied characters. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a bit of cultural discovery and an antidote to the fear of "the other" being peddled by some in politics and the media.
Like any good travel book, Memories of Antigua gave me a sense of what it’s like to meet people and visit places in a land I've never seen. What made the book stand out, though, was not its vivid details but its gentle humor. When the Findlays arrived on the island, they had a great desire to be of service and no clear plan. Their neighbors were shy until they heard them reading picture books to their children. Soon the family was part of life in Willikies, learning about pretty but poisonous bugs, putting up with braying donkeys, and chasing feisty crabs. Sustained by a spirit of openness and undaunted good humor, they came to feel at home in Willikies. This memoir could be read purely as a virtual escape to a tropical island, but it also provides a practical (not preachy) example of how to share faith and adapt to and learn from another culture.
The author made her family's time in Antigua come to life. I felt as if I was right there with them through the challenges and joys of being Baha'i pioneers in a different culture.
Fun read detailing a family's relocation to the other side of the world. Interesting hearing the tales from an adult, but I especially enjoyed the children's reactions to their new home and friends. Very enjoyable!
