A small book with lots of information and pictures. Profund subjects simple explained. Space available for it in your purse. Purchased for my highschool library.

I've read several excellent books in this series, which means that this "cartoon" format can work well in the hands of a skilled author, but this particular book is quite disappointing.The primary problem is simply that the book drops plenty of terminology, names, and dates, thus giving the impression that something is being said with some sophistication, but it turns out that no topic is covered beyond a superficial level. Compounding this problem is the fact that the book jumps abruptly from topic to topic, with no apparent overall structure or integration, so the presentation is quite fragmentary. The result of these problems is that reading this book feels like reading a glossary rather than a coherent monograph.Moreover, those who are new to the subject of anthropology are unlikely to learn much, and might even form a poor impression of what should be a fascinating and engaging subject. Part of the fault may be attributable to confusions within academic anthropology itself (maybe the general study of mankind is just too hard), but I still think this book has to take much of the blame.Perhaps the only upside is that you can finish the book quickly, but a little bit of time wasted is still wasted time.
I have been collecting and reading the Introducing series for a while and found them to be great, although very brief, introductions to various academic subjects. In many cases they stimulate in me further curiosity of these subjects.However, this book is so blatantly politically correct, it fails as a decent introduction to Anthropology. On every other page, there is some comment on how racist the field of study is. For example, on a small section on Cannibalism, the author states "Anthropologist William Arens convincingly argued that cannibals are a figment of over-heated Western imaginings." Yet in Peggy Sanday's "Divine Hunger", she says that "Although (Arens) is correct in asserting that the attribution of cannibalism is sometimes a projection of moral superiority, he is incorrect in arguing that cannibalism has never existed. Contrary to his assertion that no one has ever observed cannibalism, reliable eyewitness reports do exist....eyewitness reports presented in The Jesuit Relations contradict Arens' assertion that '(t)he collected documents of the Jesuit missionaries do not contain an eyewitness description of the latter deed.' "The book's Marxism is also blatant. In the book's section on Marxist Anthropology, one cartoon character, representing the Anthropologist, states "Anthropologists influenced by Marxist ideas made the shift to studying 'other'cultures in relation to colonialism and globalization and as part of world systems" to which another character, representing "Primitive Man" replies "You mean, they noticed how the real world works?"Finally, there is the author herself. After a brief internet search, I found that Merryl Wyn Davies' only qualification is that she became a writer after "reading Anthropology in University College." There's no record of her academic degrees or majors. Why she was chosen over a professor with a PhD in Anthropology to write this book is beyond me.I am too unfamiliar with the subject to recommend another book. But I'm convinced that there has to be something out there better than this anti-West polemic.

Concise info and history on/of Anthropology in a compact yet easy to read book. I learned more about Anthropology from reading this book, than I did in college courses!
This is kind of a neat book, but not what I was looking for. It's a VERY basic comic book of sorts to give you a very general idea of anthropology terms and ideas. If you're looking for an anthro for dummies type thing, this isn't it.
