This book is great so far. I bring it back and forth to work with me in hopes to get a few more pages on any given day. I think Nick Offerman is pretty awesome and I look forward to learning anything I can from his book

If you're like me, you own a hundred back issues of Shop Notes, Wood, and have shelves full of books on specific topics from Framing to Finishes. Most of these articles you skim, get inspired with techniques and design elements, and apply those to your own projects. After spending a few days with this book, I get the feeling that Nick understands how woodworkers and tinkerers consume books, and wanted to make something that would suit them.This book is Fun: There's lovely photography that will inspire you, and there's several techniques and ideas that were new to me in some of the project-plans. But, what makes this book different is that there are also artist profiles, general shop advice, and Nick Offerman's humor and sensibilities throughout. You probably won't read it cover-to-cover, but then, the book doesn't appear to be designed to be consumed in that way. It's perfect for a casual read; to pick up at the end of the day and read a few pages.This is not to say that the book doesn't contain practical instruction; it does, and those projects are well presented. You should be warned however that some of the projects here are going to come off as a bit precious for an older experienced woodworker, but then, many of the projects are going to be approachable and exciting to younger and inexperienced woodworkers.The fun of this book will inspire you to get back into the shop to finish your most recent project.This book would be a great gift for a wide range of woodworkers with a wide range of interests; you'd have a hard time going wrong.

I honestly held off buying this, because I thought it would be more comedy/coffee table than woodworking. I was wrong! It has a nice variation of woodworking, comedy and general lifestyle. It would totally work as a coffee table book, but it's equally, if not more so, a great cover to cover read. The level of woodworking knowledge is very broad - for the beginners it covers tools and simple projects, for advanced, it has some wonderful stories about master woodworkers/artist/teachers and some more advanced projects.Well done, Mr. Offerman.

Well this is definitely not my favorite woodworking book. As a beginner, I was looking for something fun and educational at the same time but was disappointed. For me, I was looking for helpful technique and what tools are good and getting started. The first few chapters were nice in describing wood with the texture and elements of how to respect what you are working with but I think Mr.Offerman lost me on describing expensive tools and vague descriptions of some of the work being done. Some of that falls on me as well as I wanted to deal more with hand tools than a full blown mechanized woodworking shop so alas I cannot give this book a total thrashing.A book I did enjoy that has now a number of youtube posts is done by Paul Sellers (woodworking 1 and 2) and provided me what I needed for a introduction to woodworking, good skills to learn and the bare bones for some other stuff.

Great book that starts with a brief Nick Offerman bio and then moves on to recommended tools for a shop, explaination of wood grain and such, and projects throughout. This is more about the love of woodworking than a how-to, but it's written in Nick Offerman's voice, so it's as entertaining as it is educational.

If you are buying this for the Offerman commentary then it's great. If you are buying it to learn about woodworking - it's terrible, find another resource.

Fantastic read. Offerman will challenge you to take a minute and think about the influences in your life that made you who you are. Love the mini-projects. Would like to have seen more photos of the work in process and finished at Offerman Woodshop but this book is packed already. Great job Mr. Offerman!

I didn't read all of this book. The things I did read, which was most things, I thoroughly enjoyed. Almost enough to crack a smile. But don't worry it's just dull enough that you won't, and no one will think less of you.I did however make a series of kazoos and bottle openers based on plans from this book and got a real kick from folks' positive reactions. I did smile then, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good Clean Fun was bought for the Secret Santa Exchange at my Woodworkers Club Christmas party. The person who choose the package was a little underwhelmed at first but the more he leafed through it the more interested he became. At the end of the party there was a group clustered around looking at the book. Several remarked that they would like to read it.

Kenzie’s Rules for Life INTRODUCTION So, I’ve always been a “go with the flow” kind of girl—when life hands you lemons, you make lemon slime (see recipe page xvii). My mom will tell you I have a “sunny, upbeat personality,” and my sister Maddie will agree and insist that nothing ever bugs me. But that’s not true—stuff does bug me. Stuff drives me crazy. (Um, Maddie drives me crazy sometimes, especially when she steals my makeup.) But I’ve always believed that life is what you make of it. You can sit around and mope and complain and feel sorry for yourself, or you can find a way to make things work and have a really great time doing it. I don’t know if you can have a philosophy for life at thirteen years old—it’s kind of young, don’t you think? But I do know that I have certain rules that I live by. For example: » Friends are the people who really know you and like you—even when your feet smell. » Haters gonna hate. They have nothing better to do with their time. I do! » If you see it, you can be it: There’s no such thing as dreaming too big. My dreams are XXL. » If I’m taller than my mom, I should be allowed to ride in the front seat of the car. Just sayin’. A lot of people ask me questions through social media or when they bump into me shopping at the Grove in L.A.—about everything from how to handle embarrassing situations and tips on beauty and style, to boy problems and how to convince your parents to let you stay up late on a weekend (still working on that one!). So I thought I should probably organize my answers and put them all down in one place. A book sounded like a really great idea—a lot of work, but a really great idea! I mean, I would have loved to have had some of these answers handy when I was younger and dealing with all the tween drama. People don’t know how tough it is to be a kid these days unless they’re a kid themselves. But I get it. I get all the pressure, not just in front of your face at school or at the dance studio, but on social media, too. Growing up and trying to find your way in this world can be tough—I’m still figuring it out myself. And I’m really flattered when someone comes up to me and wants my advice. I’m glad you guys trust me, because I always try to be honest. Sometimes I might say something silly or put my foot in my mouth (I can actually do that, you know—I’m pretty flexible!), but when someone asks me what I think, I tell them. I remember sitting for interviews with Maddie when we were on Dance Moms and she would roll her eyes when I gave my real opinion on something (“Kenzie, you can’t say that!”). Well, I just did! I never hold back. I’m never going to be someone I’m not, or act a certain way to fit someone else’s idea of who I should be. That’s just a formula for being unhappy and unsuccessful, don’t you think? It’s like being a fake or a phony, or putting on a mask. And I don’t mean one of those soothing sheet masks you get at Sephora—I mean one that hides who you truly are. You want to be the best person you can be? Then be yourself! Sounds like a good rule to me! Another thing you should probably know: I don’t like to sleep late, which I know is so weird for a teenager. You will rarely find me lying around all day on my couch just chilling. Binge-watching Netflix is great, but it’s a rainy-day option only. I always like to be doing something, whether it’s working, singing, writing, making YouTube videos, rehearsing, dancing, or hanging with friends. Seriously, I have to be busy. So I promise you, you will not be bored reading this book—it’s filled with so many ideas about what you can do with your day, everything from activities and quizzes to recipes and crafts. I am obsessed with watching craft how-tos on YouTube—I want to try them all. I will literally drag my mom out to Michaels to pick up tons of glue and glitter and crafting supplies so I can make something I saw on a video. She’s like, “Kenzie, really? This will make such a mess!” and I’m like, “Well, yeah—that’s the idea!” Never let a potential mess stand in your way—another one of my rules. Whether it’s a literal mess (like the time I decided to tie-dye my sneakers and wound up tie-dying myself instead) or something that doesn’t involve staining the rug, you should do it. What have you got to lose? So you try something you’ve never done before and it’s an epic fail. So what? If I make a fool of myself, I laugh about it. And I don’t give up easily. I try it again, and I work harder till I figure it out. Persistence is a great rule for life: You can never go wrong with never giving up. So you can see how these rules of mine come about. It’s a lot of trial and error and doing what makes me feel good, not just about a situation, but about who I am as a person. I hope you read them, try them out if they sound fun and helpful, and then eventually make your own rule book for life, because that’s really the goal of growing up. You get to decide what and who you want to be and how you want to go about it. For now, since I’m only a teenager, I guess I have to listen to most of what my mom and stepdad tell me to do (although the rule about making your bed every morning doesn’t seem like a keeper). To be honest, my friends and family have always been really supportive and cool about letting me be me. My mom will tell you she’s my biggest fan, and I know it, because I couldn’t have done any of the things I’ve done so far without her cheering me on. She was the first person who noticed me singing around the house all the time and suggested I take voice lessons. Now, I’m recording and writing my own music and playing to huge concert audiences all over the world! Who knew? But it goes to show that you need people who are willing to stand behind you and believe in you. As you read this book, think of me as that person for you. I know you can do whatever you set your mind to. I also know that sometimes things feel confusing and overwhelming and super frustrating, and you’d probably rather just pull the covers over your head and not come out for a week. Harper explores how people in conflict unconsciously adopt three roles: Victim, Hero, and Villain. He encourages self-awareness in playing these roles. He notes that the roles shift as a conflict rolls along. To eliminate Villain, you must give up the Victim role and ask directly . The Hero must let go of being right. The Villain must let go of attacking, even in self-defense. Harper sees conflict as unmet needs. He encourages us to notice our assumptions and to move from judgment to curiosity. He devotes a chapter to defensiveness, noting that what underlies our defensiveness is an “unbearable idea.” One chapter is titled, “Standing Up for Ourselves (Without Knocking the Other Person Down).” He points out in this chapter that it isn’t useful to take the position that “I’m okay. They need professional help.”Here are some of Harper’s tips for being a Warrior of the Heart and for exploring outside the triangle of Victim, Hero, Villain.1. Observe yourself.2. Clean up your own stuff.3. Notice the defensive impulse.4. When triggered, ask, “What do I fear?”5. Note emotional signals and ask yourself, “What’s going on here?” Ask the other. Don’t assume you know.6. Listen for the others’ needs.7. When you see you are in a position, ask, “What is important to me?”8. Rather than react to personal attacks, get curious.9. Put your movie on pause and restate the other person's story.10. Conflict is messy. It has to be. Otherwise, everything won’t come out.11. Keep a sense of humor.

Entertaining read with some useful information and a simple model for change and resolution in some, mostly benign, environments. The basic positions described offer a functional insight for simplification of how to rethink our roles with others. While useful, the concept is oversimplified when individual intent is added as another variable. In a world of sunshine and roses where everyone operates from a basis of good will to others, it provides a useful insight for avoiding common relationship road bumps. For more ardent conflicts based on deeply held judgments, deception, long patterns of passive aggressive fears and anger this simple model is way outgunned.Over all, a good read and useful idea.If you read this book, be sure to read "I'm OK, You're OK" by Thomas Harris, as it will help add important new dimension to the concepts.These two books should be combined for at least 4 times the benefit.

its states a lot of points to people's mindset and you get a good grip to a better understanding of people behaviors and how to understand and deal with many attitudes at a workplace and people you come to contact every day in life.this book clearly shows a refined way of incorporating how to deal with people you can't stand to people whom you feel is not listening to you or your needs... it's worth​ to read twice and dialogue your way towards people through this book. clearly is well written, not all is 100 but its worth a good read. you will feel clear and precise with this book. try it.

I bought this book for a conflict resolution course I was taking for my ECED degree. It was one of the few required readings I have actually enjoyed. It was light, humorous, and resourceful. I also loved all of the pop culture references.

This text was a required text for one of my classes this semester. It arrived in wonderful condition. I really like the writing style in this book and the examples used. I really do think that learning to handle conflict is a life skill, so I recommend this for everyone. This would be a great home school text as well.

365 Cats Page A Day is a lifeline between my best friend in London and her mother who lives in South Florida. Each day her mother texts a picture of the cat of the day to her daughter to signal to her daughter that' she is OK. On the occasion 2-years ago when a picture was not sent the building condo management were alerted and they found my friends mother in ill health. Truly 365 Cats Page A Day brings great joy and is an international safety checker!

I've been getting this calendar for my desk at work for over 25 years. I've had three different jobs in that time, but only one cat calendar that I return to year after year.What makes it so special is that these aren't bland professional photographs, but instead are taken by average folks of their own beloved kitties, often accompanied by affectionate, humorous blurbs about their cat's background and personality (or should I say PURR-sonality?). The love for these little guys shines through on every page.Plus it's always fun to flip through and see how many cats from my home state (Connecticut) made it in.Other page a day kitty calendars may come and go, but 365 Cats is the classic and irreplaceable. The gift that keeps on giving and truly a joy.

I buy this calendar almost every year. Sometimes I try a different one, but I always end up coming back to this one. Love the pictures and the information on each of the pages! When the day is done I have a piece of paper I can write notes and lists on. Yes I still write notes instead of putting the info in my phone. :-)

I get this calendar every Christmas for my elderly cat lady mother, and she LOVES it. She cannot wait to see what tomorrow's cat of the day is going to look like, and has to bore the pee out of me every time I go to her house, by showing me all the past cats of the day. She was recently hospitalized for a little over a month, so I took her calendar to her so she could keep track of the days and continue to see the cats of the day. This is a gift to the cat lover that keeps giving all year.

I seriously love this calendar! Ever since my first I had ordered, one I have been ordering one every year. As a cat owner and lover, I love the different cat images every day plus a little fun cat fact! Nice quality. Thick paper pages. Back of the pages are blank so can be used to take notes after if you're the type who doesn't like to waste!

I buy these Cat-a-day Calendars every year. They are beautifully full color printed on fairly hardy paper stock. Each page has a unique Cat with information about each Cat.They even have contests each year where you can submit a Photo of your Cat doing something crazy or interesting, and Workman Publishing might just use your Cat's Photo in its next edition of Calendar.

I love this calendar. I'm a self-proclaimed crazy cat lady and have requested this calendar as a Christmas gift from my husband for at least the last 5 years. I keep it at my desk at work, and flipping the page everyday puts a smile on my face. Last year I even submitted some photos of my own two cats, so I'm hoping I'll see them on one of the calendar pages this year. Haha. Definitely a great buy for cat lovers!

I love this darling day by day calendar which pairs gorgeous photos of kittens and cats with amusing, informative or philosophical sidebars on each page. On Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday the picture showed a cat and ferret playing together and King's quote that love was the only power that could transform enemies into friends. The quotes return to my mind all day and each time I see the cat pictures it makes me smile.

The Platonic Socrates in the dialogue Euthyphro poses the question of morality and the gods to the titular character, Epicurus declared that while gods existed they did not interfere with the affairs of humankind, and Aristotle gave several arguments in Metaphysics for what he called an "unmoved mover" and "first cause", which he identified with the gods.However, in our modern age the so called "New Atheists" (a misleading appellation, there is nothing new about them) appear to have definitively answered these age old questions and assert that science is the pathway to answering this and all meaningful questions because science is the only thing that counts as evidence. This position, known as scientism, is of course itself not supported by science or experience, but the New Atheists seem to have missed the memo.In his short book God and the New Atheism: A Critical Response to Dawkins, Harris, and Hitchens, theologian John F. Haught takes on the primary New Atheist writers and shows that they are neither new nor atheistic in a philosophical sense. His first critique of them is that they do not take on the arguments for God's existence or the proper definition of faith; rather they attack caricatures and straw-men and never seem to show that they have ever read a book of theology or philosophy of religion. The New Atheists would argue that the average religious person has probably not read Thomas Aquinas, Augustine of Hippo, Karl Barth, Blake Ostler, or Paul Tillich, and they likely would be right (which should make the average religious person feel intellectually lazy and have the desire to repent). However, the principle of charity demands that when trying to falsify a claim you attack the argument at its strongest rather than at its weakest point. But then, it is likely the New Atheists have not taken a course in logic either.Two of the best points that Haught makes in his book are about whether or not belief in God is a scientific hypothesis and also whether we can be good without God. On the first question, he reminds readers that science is useful (but limited) in finding out about the material universe that we reside in, but God is a transcendent being (in the Judeo-Christian-Islamic sense) so we cannot use the scientific method to verify or falsify the proposition that God exists. Also, Haught talks abut the fact that meaning is not monistic as Richard Dawkins wants to imply, meaning that not all meaning is reducible to scientific inquiry. Rather, meaning can be pluralistic as Haught shows here:This assumption [scientific naturalism] overlooks the fact that multiple layers of understanding or explanation can exist. Almost everything in our experience, after all, admits of a plurality of levels of explanation in which various accounts do not compete with one another. For example, one explanation of the page you are reading is that a printing press has stamped ink onto white paper. Another is that the author intends to put certain idea across. Still another explanation is that a publisher asked the author to write a critical response to the new atheism. Notice that these three layers all explain the page you are reading, but they are not competing with or contradicting one another. It makes no sense to argue, for example, that the page you are reading can be explained by the printing press rather than by the author's intention to write something. Nor does it make sense to say that this page exists because of the publishers request rather than because the author wants to record some ideas. The distinct levels are noncompetitive and mutually compatible. (God and the New Atheism, pg. 85)Close quote. To simplify Haught's eloquence, religion and science are not in competition with each other because they are different ways of looking at things. Take for example the existence of humans. A scientific way of looking at this question is that humans exist because they evolved from simpler forms of life through natural selection and random mutation. A religious way of looking at the same question is that God created humans for the purpose of coming to know him and become like him. Both answers are explaining the same phenomena, and both are compatible.Also, Dawkins, Harris, and Hitchens seem to think that people believe in God because he is the ultimate explanation of why anything at all exists. While it is true that this is an argument for God's existence, this is not why people worship God. A God who is merely a mechanic is not worthy of worship; notice Aristotle says nothing about worshiping God in Metaphysics.The last point I want to make is about God and morality. For some reason, both New Atheists and some theists believe that the scriptures primary purpose is to teach us morality (something neither the Torah, New Testament, Book of Mormon, or Quran say), and since there are instances of murder, adultery, genocide, rape, and other moral atrocities, the scriptures cannot be the foundation of morality. In response to this, Haught makes the following points. First, it is a misuse of the text to try to learn something book that the book is not trying to teach. The scriptures are primarily about God's dealings with ancient people, not teaching ethics. Also, while the scriptures are not the foundation of morality, the New Atheists have not provided an adequate explanation of moral realism, which they all seem to espouse. Dawkins appeals to biology, but that is to rush from facts to values, something David Hume cautioned against. Harris, appeals to moral intuition, but he forgets A.J. Ayer's objection to moral intuitionism by stating that different cultures have different intuitions, so morality cannot be objective. In short, the New Atheist's have torn down the foundations of traditional morality (or so they think), but they have not given an adequate replacement.Whether one is a theist, atheist, or agnostic, one should read carefully Haught's book.

A friend recommended Haught's work to me on this subject. Most books written contra the New Atheists are written by apologists (eg. Trent Horn's Answering Atheists). Haught's book is different as he writes as a theologian. For comparison, Edward Feser's rebuttal (the Last Superstition) on the other hand is a philosophical response. All three share many things in common, but each work shows a slightly different approach appropriate to the expertise of the author. Haught's main complaint is that the New Atheists share a major commonality with the fundementalist religions they debunk: they don't bother to even try to take engage with theology. This is as dishonest as someone who writes to debunk evolution who has never even bothered to become aquainted with the study of biology.

The book is very readable and the author is clearly well read. While the author does a reasonably fair job in laying out the central arguments of the new atheists, he neither provides much substantive criticism of the atheist's case or much of a defense of his own beliefs. His criticism of atheism seemed to involve a lot of name dropping (Camus, Sartre, various modern theologians) and focus on what seemed to me to be minor issues (we can't be absolutely sure of anything so who are we to decide someone's beliefs are wrong?), but it doesn't tackle the major issues (is there any evidence for god/gods, are there any major flaws in science's approach to understanding the universe, is religion a fundamentally positive or negative thing). His own beliefs were very unclear; he doesn't seem to believe God has any direct impact on the world, he doesn't seem to think the bible is particularly accurate or authoritative, he's very unclear as to what faith is (other than it's not what is traditionally meant by it), etc.As someone brought up in a god free environment, I've never really understood why a rational person would believe in the supernatural. I'm glad I read the book to try to get an understanding of the theistic point of view; but based on this book, the theistic point of view seems to lack any solid arguments in it's favor.

Best brief response I've see to the "new atheists" who (1) not only limit their anti-religion arguments to attacks on literalists and fundamentalists while ignoring much more nuanced and intelligent understandings of faith, (2) but also insist that there is no religion other that literalistic fundamentalism; (3) assume without examination that naturalism is the only rational world view, and (4) lack both the candlepower and courage of significant atheists of previous eras who were willing to acknowledge the meaninglessness of life in a world without purpose. That they have made such a splash in our time says more about the ignorance and shallowness of readers than the quality of their thought. In terms of what they believe and they way they defend it, they are simply the mirror opposites of the fundamentalists they lampoon.

The author lays out very clearly the case against God by the "new" aethiests, or scientific materialists and shows its fatal flaws. First it is logically incoherent as it relies on principles that cannot meet their tests of verifiability. Second it fails at the beginning because while abusing "faith" in God, It depends on the same kind and level of "faith" in reason. The "new" aethiests have not read VOQuine, a materialist himself, who recognizzes that all knowledge begins in faith. We have faith that the universe is organized and knowable. Why not God?

I just finished reading the book cover-to-cover. I will admit this book does a very great job with the picture illustrations and breaking down the concepts in CCNA Security concepts. I came from reading books from Cisco Press, and I believe they(Cisco Press) goes in so much detail that they complicate some of the concepts.Where this book fell short was probably the organization of the chapter breakdown. At times I felt the book was written going off of the author(s) train of thought and wrote it down as it was coming to them, it was very lackluster and at times I felt like I had to go back or forward to the chapter that did explain some of the concepts such as IDS/IPS. Another thing that I noticed that was missing was when the author(s) would talk about a concept, but not go into detail or forgot some of the details. An example would be when the book was explaining how to secure Layer 2 devices. In short the author(s) should had started with port-security then moved on to dhcp snooping, dynamic arp inspection and ip source guard. I mention this because this is like a pyramid, where the basic and most used idea will be at the bottom and everything else builds upon it when you are on the device's CLI (Command Line Interface). One particular part that was missed was loop guard on Layer 2 devices. Another was EAP and the other variants used for authenticating a user, such as EAP-FASTv1,EAP-FASTv2, EAP-LEAP,EAP-TLS and SEIM Technology and lastly MAC Authentication Bypass(MAB).In short I know this looks like I'm complaining about the shortcomings of the book, but do not be fooled, I greatly appreciate some of the author(s) insight and perspective on concepts that I read from Cisco Press that felt overwhelming to something that was broken down into an easy to understand concept. I acknowledge that this is a guide and like most guides they cannot cover every aspect related in CCNA Security because the rest comes from the reader to have either the experience from working or having the actual equipment to tinker with. Either way this is a great book overall and it gives you the basic concepts that you are required to know and you may need to find other books to go deeper into the concepts. I know this because I have read other security books to prepare myself for the exam and in each new book it is a review, but I also gain knowledge in areas that were covered.

I finished the book. It was a quick read and very superficial. Organization was a little haphazard and it is obivious that the authors and the editors don't have any kind of training in education because there were a few places that clearly could have been improved upon to help flow and understanding. My biggest gripe is that a vast majority of the book that had labs, they could not be done with packet tracer. I don't have GNS3 and no a real lab so I had to skip a lot of chapters because it was worthless for me until I put an actual physical lab together. I have now bought the cisco press book and will edit this review now that I have a baseline.

I love the book. I'm an extremely binary person, but I'll be the first one to say I'm much better with numbers and mathematics than I am at reading. Due to this, for both ICND1 and ICND2 I was unable to read the Cisco Press books because they were flat out too challenging of a read for me. This book however is great because its straight to the point, very informative, and very simplistic. Easy to understand what the writer is trying to convey.I'm only about 20% into my CCNA: Security studies, so I can't state whether or not this book covers all the exam objectives. That said, what I have read so far is great information and delivered in a great writing style. I think at 20$ (kindle version) it’s a no brainer.

Good book but not sure it covers 100% of CCNA Security exam. I saw some of dump and I found some questions that does not covered by this book. It is good book and I would say it covers 85% of CCNA security. Still good book to understand Network Security.

I am about halfway through this book, and so far it is immensely more detailed than the official Cisco guide for this exam. There are some layout issues and plenty of grammatical issues that make for awkward reading at times...but it does not seem to be missing information like the official Cisco title.

There is some useful information, but this won't be the book that will guide you to certification.
